rope, umkhando and the tongue : writing from the performances of Buhlebezwe Siwani

performance, writing

A durational video of white animated text on a black background plays on the cinema screen. The audience read together silently. The performer sits in front of the screen; her face is lit up by a laptop. The screenglare on her face changes colour and intensity – green, white, pink – choreographed by the minimal sounds of scrolling and double clicking.

rope, umkhando and the tongue: writing from the performances of Buhlebezwe Siwani is a 10 minute performance with video included in Writing Photographs at Starr Cinema, Tate Modern, 13 October 2018. The text is published by SALT. for their tenth issue Glossolalia August 2019.
